I just had the honor of interviewing one of Nashville's most prominent historians, who gave me the inspiration behind this Printer’s Alley photograph!

Our recorded interview ended up lasting 90 minutes, covering Nashville's long history starting in the late 1700s!

Mr. Jim Hardaway is also a long time professional private tour guide in the city and told me the following:

1) Nashville was founded in 1779, after Jim Nash (a Revolutionary War hero). Nashborough was the original name for the city, "borough" (old english word for 'city').

2) Country music which Nashville is so known for, started in the 1920s and 30s and came from farmers, railroad workers and mountain folk. They didn't wear cowboy hats or wear western clothes.

It was Hollywood's later influence that sort of merged the genres, making "Country and Western" and creating the look and cowboy persona of Country musicians like Hank Williams.

3) Nashville was the print publishing center of the South, long before it was the country music capital.

4) Nashville has a long history of higher education, and was known as the Athens of the South (ancient Anthens, in Greece, was a famous center for learning) long before it was known as Music City.

I had an incredible time listening to the city's history and to hear first hand accounts by a man who'd lived it, brought me a new understanding of this wonderful city!

If you ever come to Nashville, I recommend looking up "Captain Jim Hardaway Tours"!
